Portrait Photography
The Art of the Portrait
A portrait is far more than a simple likeness. It is a collaboration between photographer and subject, a moment of connection frozen in time. The best portraits reveal something essential about a person—not just how they appear, but who they are.
My approach to portrait photography emphasizes authenticity over artifice. Rather than imposing a predetermined aesthetic, I work with each subject to discover the unique qualities that make them compelling. This might be the intensity of a gaze, the subtle play of expression across a face, or the graceful gesture of a hand.
The Technical Foundations
Lighting is the soul of portrait photography. I employ a minimalist approach, typically using a single light source or simple two-light setups that create dimensional, sculptural quality without overwhelming the subject. The goal is always to enhance, never to dominate.
I work with professional Canon camera systems and prime lenses—typically in the 50mm to 135mm range—that provide the optical quality and shallow depth of field that characterize fine art portraiture. These tools allow me to isolate subjects from their backgrounds, drawing the viewer's eye directly to the face and expression.
Studio vs. Environmental Portraits
Studio Work: In the controlled environment of the studio, every element serves the portrait. Clean backgrounds eliminate distraction. Carefully modulated lighting sculpts form and creates mood. The subject becomes the entire world of the photograph.
Environmental Portraits: Photographing subjects in their own environments—whether a workplace, home, or meaningful outdoor location—adds narrative context. These portraits tell stories not just of individuals, but of the relationship between people and places.
The Session Experience
A portrait session is a collaborative creative process. We begin with a consultation to discuss your vision and goals. During the session itself, I work to create a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere where authentic expressions can emerge naturally.
For subjects who may feel self-conscious before the camera, I provide gentle direction while encouraging spontaneity. The best portraits often happen in the pauses between poses—those unguarded moments when technique gives way to genuine connection.
Post-Production Philosophy
My post-production approach emphasizes refinement over transformation. I work to enhance the qualities already present in the image—adjusting tonal relationships, refining skin tones, and ensuring that the technical aspects of the photograph serve its emotional content.
According to professional photography organizations like the Professional Photographers of America, ethical post-production maintains the integrity of the portrait while achieving the highest aesthetic standards. This balance is essential to creating portraits that are both beautiful and authentic.
Portrait Commissions
I accept a limited number of portrait commissions each year, ensuring that each project receives the full attention it deserves. Whether you are seeking a professional headshot, a personal portrait, or a creative collaboration, I approach every session with the same commitment to excellence.
Commissioned portraits include a pre-session consultation, the photography session itself, and professional retouching of selected images. Fine art prints are available in a range of sizes and substrates to suit your needs.
